Bethany & Rufus met for the first time in 1999.
Bethany - then looking for a bass player - got totally gob-smacked by Rufus' style. When he agreed to join her band she did not expect at the time that HE on his own would be the band ! As a warm up before going serious they had a go at folk songs : soon were they to realise that the combination of a voice and a cello, linked to the power of these traditional songs was as austere as magnificent, defying the common meaning of the word 'folk' and transcended both musical genres and générations.
Daughter of Peter Yarrow (of legendary band ‘Peter, Paul and Mary),
Bethany was completely born and bred in a folk background. Her simply extraordinary stage presence, her hypnotic voice and her deep knowledge of the repertoire altogether allow her to find the perfect inner vibration for each song with the strength and grace it deserves.
Rufus Cappadocia is currently one the most acclaimed cellists. He toured Europe and America with numerous bands and is also famous for his collaborations with artists from all over the world, from the Balkans to the Caribbean Islands, from Western Africa to Northern America... He performed a lot with Urban Tap and the Paradox Trio ; he recorded with Badal Roy (who played tablas with Miles Davis) and Barney Mcall (who played piano with Gary Bartz) ; and has just finished recording a new project, les Tambours Vaudou d’Haïti with « Bonga » Jean-Baptiste, as well as a solo cello CD. ZAfter years of experimentations, Rufus plays on an electric cello which he built himself : it allows him to expand the basses of the instrument and to explore new tonalities thanks the electric amplification. Rufus built his career by exploring new territories where few cellists had dared venture before him. Thus, he appears on the albums of Ross Daly, Kif, David Fiuczynski, The Paradox Trio, Odetta, Michael Blake, and Tamalalou. Rufus also performed with Kasse Mady, Aretha Franklin, The Black Rock Coalition, Esma, Theodossi Spassoff, Seamus Egan, Eileen Eivers, Cheick-Tidiane Seck, Vernon Reid, and many others...
